How-to: Kale Juice With a Blender

I remember walking in London and peeking into these chic juice shops. A couple times, I went in. The whirring sounds of juicing, the colorful drinks, and the industrial feel – each delectable cup with its hefty price tag felt like a luxury.

Of course, green juice is quite nutritious. However, if you are a student like me or if you are on the fence of about this latest trend, you probably don’t own an expensive juicer. That’s okay!

Here comes the juicing method with a blender (and a strainer):

Prepare the ingredients: My recipe always includes freshly washed kale and fruits (usually grapes and mangoes). The night before, I wash the fruits, chop them if necessary, and freeze overnight in small ziploc bags.  To get the blending started, you can add water or coconut water. Today, since I am making this for my dad as well, I am using vanilla almond milk for extra calcium 🙂

Blending time! Find your kitchen blender. I’m using the Hamilton Beach Blender. 

Straining the pulp: After the blending, the mixture is more like a smoothie. If you prefer the fiber, you can skip this step! To get the smooth texture of a juice, we will need to strain the drink. I use a simple strainer with fine mesh on top of my cup and swirl the top with a spoon to accelerate the process. Gently press down on the pulp with the back of the spoon to get the last drops of juice and scoop it out to a bowl, which can be saved for composting. Repeat for the rest of the drink.

10 minutes later….

……ta-daaa! The natural sugar from fruits counteracts the bitter taste of kale and leaves the drink sweetened. It’s a delicious and healthy treat for a summer afternoon. 

That was so simple, right? Go blend away!

  4. Love this! I always try to work kale into smoothies, but I don’t really like the thick texture of smoothies, so this could work out way better. Also love the way you edit your photos xx
